SLS FAQs
Please Contact Us with any questions you may have about our Rapid Prototyping Services or the SLS process. Here are some of our frequently asked questions:
Q. Is laser sintering (SLS) only for making prototypes?
A. No. As an example: Thousands of our parts have been produced as production parts for installation on UAVs. These parts have amassed over 800,000 hours of flight time.
Q. Can SLS parts be produced overnight and delivered within 24 hours?
A. Yes. Our Nylon 12 material and finishes are produced at exceptional speed, and have been delivered to local customers within 24 hours. We typically quote a one week lead time. Other materials and finishes have a longer turnaround time but are often delivered in day’s ― weeks less than conventional methods.
Q. What is the correct name for the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) process?
A. There are a variety of terms. The Industry has taken steps to promote the term "Additive Manufacturing" as a standard. Other terms include:
- 3D Printing
- SLS Manufacturing
- Additive Manufacturing
- Rapid Manufacturing
- Selective Laser Sintering
- SLS Prototyping
- Rapid Prototyping
- Short Run Manufacturing
- Limited Run Manufacturing
- 3D Prototyping
- Direct Digital Prototyping
- Direct Digital Manufacturing
- Desktop Fabrication
Q. Can I print any design?
A. Almost. Some designs are better than others. Please email your CAD file and we will let you know if there are any concerns. Some design considerations include sharp corners which create stress risers, and fastener holes located in hard-to-reach places.
Q. Is there a way to make parts FDA-compliant, for use with food?
A. Yes! Our Nylon 12 material is FDA-compliant for direct contact with food. We also have FDA-compliant paint in a wide range of colors that are certified for direct contact with food.
Q. Are SLS Materials RoHS Compliant?
A Certain materials are restricted for use in newer electronic and electric equipment. Consult the RoHS (Restriction of Use of Hazardous Substances) regulations Statement of Compliance – RoHS and WEEE Directives for more information.
Q. Are Biocompatibility Certificates available for the materials used in the SLS process?
A Yes. NWRapid has a Biocompatibility Certificate on file for one version of Nylon 12. This certificate can be provided upon request, by contacting us at make@nwrapidmfg.com.
