We teamed up with Portland’s POA Design to build a functional 3D-printed prototype for Kurt Hausheer’s PlyoTower. Billed as “The Next Evolution in Plyometrics,” this custom fitness equipment is designed to help athletes literally jump to new heights.
The Bottleneck: Taking the Leap from Concept to Reality
We needed to transform an ambitious digital design into a durable, functional prototype ready for rigorous athletic testing. The goal was to build a piece of jump training equipment that could handle real-world stress before the design firm moved into full-scale production. It is one thing to draw a complex fitness machine on a computer, but it is another entirely to ensure it survives a heavy workout.
The Solution: Selective Laser Sintering and a Little Nylon 12 Magic
To conquer this challenge, we turned to our selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing technology. We selected PA 2201, a highly durable, unfilled Nylon 12 powder perfect for producing tough, functional parts. The project threw us a curveball with its massive multibody assemblies. Getting the moving mechanical components and weldment subassemblies to fit perfectly required extreme precision. Thankfully, our technicians are wizards. They expertly assembled and finished the additive manufacturing components to meet every functional requirement without breaking a sweat.
The Results: Exceeding Expectations and Sticking the Landing
